For the past 10 years, I have had the opportunity to teach First Grade in Plano ISD. I have loved every minute of it. First Grade is a very challenging grade but very rewarding as you are the one teaching a child to read and to write. When you see a child start to understand that they can really read, it makes you so proud. You can see how excited they are and how proud they are of themselves. Those moments stay with you forever.
I always knew I had a calling to help others. Growing up, I participated in various mission trips and volunteer opportunities within our community. I have also loved working with children throughout my high school and college years.
I attended the University of Texas at Dallas where I received my degree in Psychology. I then attended Southern Methodist University where I received my teaching certification. Since that time, I have attended numerous trainings, conducted numerous trainings for the school district, including new teacher trainings. These have been amazing opportunities for me. I am also proud to say that I was honored as Beginning Teacher of the Year for Hedgcoxe Elementary in 2000 and Hedgcoxe Teacher of the Year in 2007 which led me to an Excellence in Teaching Award for our district.
When I found out about “Teach with Jamaica”, I just knew this was the opportunity I’ve always been looking for. To be able to provide help for so many children in need and to be able to provide crucial teaching skills and tools to Jamaican teachers, just overwhelmed me with joy. I cannot wait to start this amazing adventure and work as hard as I possibly can to help make lives better for Jamaican students and teachers. I am thankful and feel very blessed to have this opportunity!
